A guide to our mahjong gatherings
What is a 101 lesson?
Mahjong 101 is a two-hour introductory lesson designed especially for those brand new to American mahjong. Whether you’ve never touched a tile or simply want a proper foundation, this class is the perfect place to begin.
The cost for a Mahjong 101 Lesson is $60 per person with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8.
Our time together is thoughtfully divided into three parts:
1. Getting to Know the Tiles – We’ll walk through the suits, honors, and essential terminology so you feel comfortable recognizing every tile at the table.
2. Understanding the Card – A guided, approachable explanation of how to read the National Mah Jongg League card and understand winning hands.
3. Guided Play & Core Rules – You’ll learn the flow of the game, including the Charleston, calling tiles, and the basics of how a hand unfolds — all with step-by-step support.
You’ll leave feeling confident identifying tiles, reading the card, and understanding how a game progresses — ready to join a beginner table with ease.
No prior experience required. Just come ready to learn and have fun.
What is a 102 lesson?
Mahjong 102 is a two-hour continuation lesson designed for those who have completed Mahjong 101 (or have equivalent familiarity with basic gameplay) and are ready to build confidence at the table.
The cost for a Mahjong 102 Lesson is $50 per person with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8.
Structured as guided play, this session allows you to apply what you’ve learned in a supportive, real-game setting. We’ll reinforce the flow of the game, clarify more detailed rules, and walk through common gameplay scenarios that help everything truly “click.”
We’ll also introduce beginner-friendly strategy — including hand selection, when to pivot, and how to navigate typical decision-making moments — while refining table flow and etiquette.
Mahjong 102 is designed to move you from understanding the basics to feeling comfortable playing with minimal guidance. You’ll leave confident setting up a table, managing gameplay smoothly, and ready to join open play or host a casual game of your own.
What is an open play?
Open Play is a social mahjong gathering designed for those who already know the basics of American mahjong and feel comfortable playing independently.
Open play and social events are priced as scheduled and vary.
We’ll provide a beautifully set table and full tablescape — you simply bring the correct card for the event (a limited number of extras will be available). Unless otherwise noted, we will use the current year National Mah Jongg League card.
You’ll have approximately two hours to play as many games as your table would like in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Light snacks, refreshments, and small prizes are included.
Open Play does not include formal instruction and is best suited for those comfortable with the basic rules and flow of the game.
We provide everything needed for your game play except the NMJL card; however, we will typically have a few available to borrow if someone forgets to bring their card or needs one for the event.
